Broad Bahn Looks for Historic Double

Out of the 35 years of the Canadian Trotting Classic, only seven horses have been able to win the Hambletonian and Canadian Trotting Classic in the same year. They are Armbro Goal (1988), Giant Victory (1991), Yankee Paco (2000), Windsong’s Legacy (2004), Donato Hanover (2007), Deweycheetumnhowe (2008) and Muscle Hill (2009). Broad Bahn (Broadway Hall) will be looking to become the eighth horse to pull off this historic double.

10 horses are in pursuit of the $1-million Canadian Trotting Classic. Listed below is the field.

In the Canadian Trotting Classic, Manofmanymissions (Yankee Glide) and Daylon Magician are listed as the favorites in here. Broad Bahn will also be a heavy betting interest. Dejarmbro and Whatever It Takes (Credit Winner) may bring some high odds with that trio entered. “Takes” gained a lot of ground but had no room and was fourth by ¾ lengths in his elimination.

Dejarmbro is also a good betting interest in here. Although he has been second to this group several times, he is still the best. He was not eligible for the Hambletonian, nor is he for the Breeders Crown. But Dejarmbro is a strong horse and Brian Sears may put him in mid-pack and he may take advantage of Broad Bahn’s speed.    

Burke Team Sweeps ‘Quillen’ Elims

On Monday, September 12, Harrington Raceway held the $60,000 Bobby Quillen Memorial eliminations.

In the first elimination, Foiled Again (Dragon Again) won, with Clear Vision (Western Hanover) finishing second and Mainland Key N was third. “Foiled” and “Mainland” both went for the lead approaching the backstretch. Foiled cleared the lead at the 3/16 and took them by the quarter in :27.4. Mainland was in second, “Clear” was in third, Go Go Solano was in fourth and Summer Camp (Rocknroll Hanover) was fifth and last around the far turn.

Foiled had the lead approaching the half mile, with Mainland at the rail in second and Clear came first over in third. “Solano” was second over in fourth and “Camp” trailed them all. Foiled lead them to the half in :57 (:29.1).

Foiled and Clear dueled heading to three quarters, with Mainland buried at the rail in third and Solano moving into fourth. Camp came third over in the back. Foiled lead them to three-quarters in 1:24.3.

Into the stretch, Foiled had the lead, with Clear in second and Mainland in third. Foiled was under a hand drive by Yannick Gingras. Clear was on the outside in second and Mainland was holding on for third. Foiled Again crossed the line first. Clear Vision finished second, Mainland Key N was third and Go Go Solano finished fourth. Those four proceed to the final next week.

Foiled Again is owned by Burke Racing Stables LLC, Weaver Bruscemi LLC and JJK Stables LLC. He is trained by Ron Burke and Yannick Gingras drove him to a 1:51.2 victory.

“He’s unbelievably sharp right now.” Yannick Gingras said. “This might be the sharpest he’s been.”

In the second elimination, Atochia (Dragon Again) won, with Pangiorno finishing second and Giddy Up Lucky (Camluck) was third. Pangiorno went for the lead, with Atochia moving into second and Real Nice settling in third. Pangiorno took them to the quarter in :27.2. Atochia was in second, “Nice” was in third, “Lucky” was in fourth and “Art” was in fifth.

Pangiorno was untouched by the half in :56.1 (:28.4). Atochia stalked him in second and Lucky was first over in third. Nice was at the rail in fourth and Hypnotic Blue Chip (Art Major) was second over in fifth.

Pangiorno still had the lead at three-quarters in 1:23.4 (:27.3). Atochia and Lucky dueled behind him and “Hypnotic” moved into third.

Into the stretch, Pangiorno had the lead and Atochia came up the passing lane and took the lead with lightning speed. He was clear from there and went on to win. Pangiorno finished second, Giddy Up Lucky was third and Hypnotic Blue Chip finished fourth. Those four progress to the final next week.

Atochia is owned by Burke Racing Stables LLC, Weaver Bruscemi LLC and JJK Stables LLC. He is trained by Ron Burke and Yannick Gingras drove.

‘Quillens’ Attract ‘Crown’ Participants

The eliminations for the Bobby Quillen Memorial are set for tonight and attract world champions and the defending champion Foiled Again (Dragon Again). The 2009 winner Won The West (Western Hanover) is not participating this year.

In the first elimination, Foiled Again is the likely favorite and one to beat. In the exotics, Summer Camp (Rocknroll Hanover) looks like a key for second. He returned to Josh Green, who had him at the beginning of the year in the Clyde Hirt and Exit 16W late closers at the Meadowlands. “Summer” has been participating in many Opens and Winners Of events in Pennsylvania, New York and Delaware. Summer gets a home field advantage, since he knows the track really well.

In the second elimination, Atochia (Dragon Again) is the morning line favorite, along with his stablemate Dreamlands Art. The public will likely ignore the two best horses on the half mile, Giddy Up Lucky (Camluck) and Real Nice(Pictured Right). “Lucky” has reigned over the Open ranks on the half mile ovals on the east coast. Real Nice beat Foiled Again in the George Morton Levy Pacing series and has done well since. They are a good key to box in the exotics.

Misterizi Found Dead in New Zealand

The 2008 Nat Ray Trot winner Misterizi was found dead at Royden Lodge in Christchurch, New Zealand after rupturing his stomach.

Misterizi retired recently due to an injury in his hind leg while in the care of horsemen Tim and Anthony Butt. “It’s a terrible shame, a bloody tragedy really,” Anthony Butt said. An autopsy will be performed to figure out an exact cause of death with details to be released later this week.

“It’s certainly not the best way to start a day, I'm told he was found dead in his stall but there isn't much anybody could have done to help save him because it's just one of those freak things."

"Nobody can predict these things, it's not completely foreign but you don't wish it upon any animal and it's a real shame because he was a lovely old horse with movie style looks and a great temperament. Paul will be disappointed and I feel for him, it's never easy when a tragedy like this strikes.” Anthony also said.

Misterizi was standing stud at Royden Lodge for the upcoming breeding season, with a stud fee of NZ$2,000.

“Since he was announced at Roydon Lodge, the response has been very good with plenty of people asking me about him when I was at the workouts on Saturday. He had a great career in North America and Canada and I believe he would've been a great addition to the breeding ranks down here but it wasn't meant to be unfortunately, such a shame,” Anthony added.

Tim and Anthony Butt will also take care of Lisagain, who will be arriving in Canterbury on Tuesday morning, after serving his quarantine period in Auckland over the past couple of weeks.

The US$600,000 earner has a lifetime mark of 1:49.4 and has such stakes under his belt as the 2010 Four Leaf Clover at the Meadowlands and the Des Smith Pacing Classic at Rideau Carlton. Lisagain is a half-brother to Lismara, who also stands stud in New Zealand.

The Butts are hoping for the same success they encountered with another former North American pacer in Mr Feelgood who won the Inter Dominion Pacing Final and Hunter Cup in 2009.

'Stephen' Suffers Severe Career Injury

The two-year-old Dan Patch winner Pastor Stephen suffered a bad injury after his effort in the Canadian Trotting Classic elimination. It is a season ending and possibly a career ending injury.

“Pastor’s” trainer Jimmy Takter said on Sunday night that Pastor was diagnosed with a broken coffin bone. He made a break and finished last in his elimination.

Pastor went off as the 7-2 third choice in his elimination. The week before, he dazzled the public in a 1:52.4 victory in the Simcoe. After that Performance, Takter thought that Pastor was getting his act together.

The Dan Patch winner currently has career earnings that surpass $1-million. He has visited the winners circle 10 times, finished second six times and third twice out of 22 lifetime starts. Pastor is by Cantab Hall out of the mare Gala Lavec. He is owned by Christina Takter, John Fielding and Brittany Farms. Trained by Jimmy Takter and Ron Pierce has drove Pastor throughout his three-year-old season.

‘Crown’ Contenders Conflict in Canada

Saturday night, Sept. 10, featured Grand Circuit action at Mohawk Racetrack, attracting a few Breeders Crown contenders. The Cane Pace was the sport’s co-feature on the night at Pocono Downs.

Canada featured the $80,000 Canadian Trotting Classic eliminations, $233,287 Simcoe three-year-old pace, $239,801 Champlain two-year-old filly pace and the $299,012 Champlain two-year-old pace.

In the first “Classic” elim, Daylon Magician, owned and trained by Dave Lemon, defeated Hambletonian-winner Broad Bahn (Broadway Hall) in a 1:53.3 performance. Broad Bahn finished a tight second and Sim Brown pulled a big shocker finishing third at 70-1 for Randall Waples. Whatever It Takes (Credit Winner) got late racing room and finished fourth, beating Blue Porsche (Glidemaster) by ¼ length. VC Chocoholic (Chocolatier) left the gate fast for Brian Sears and controlled the pace, until he was caught at the eighth pole. He ended up sixth at 45-1. Luckycharm Hanover (Andover Hall) watched the fireworks and did nothing; he ended up seventh.

In the second Classic elim, Manofmanymissions (Yankee Glide) with David Miller up, dominated the field. He made a backstretch brush to the lead from sixth. He controlled the race from there on and defeated Dejarmbro. Whiskey Tax (Revenue S) was third and Imperial Count was fourth. Zweig-winner Charlie De Vie (Yankee Glide) broke at the three-eighths pole, along with Pastor Stephen (Cantab Hall). Chapter Seven (Windsong’s Legacy) did not trot much of a race but managed to qualify for the final as he finished fifth. Highland Thunder (Conway Hall) was in the same situation as Luckycharm Hanover.

In the first Simcoe, Mario Baillargeon steered Richard Berthiaume’s  Odysseus Blue Chip (Cam’s Card Shark) to a neck win, beating American Arena (American Ideal), who went off at 23-1 for Ron Pierce. Westwardho Hanover (Dragon Again) pulled back to last as the gate opened and came back strong in the stretch to finish third. Line Officer (Rocknroll Hanover) delivered a poor race. Weigh The Odds (Bettor’s Delight) was the early favorite and ended up getting cover and faltering to finish sixth.

In the second Simcoe, Up The Credit (Western Terror) rebounded after suffering four losses after his victory in the Meadowlands Pace consolation back in July for owners Carl Jamieson (who also trains), Thomas Kyron, Brian R Paquet and Joanne M Morrison. Bullet Speed came from Jupiter to finish second and homeboy Mystician (Camluck) finished third. Both Prana (Dragon Again) and Rockabille (Rocknroll Hanover) made breaks at the start and finished sixth and seventh, respectively. Sonic Dancer (Mach Three) sat in fourth and maintained his position till he crossed the red and white of the wire. Roll On (Rocknroll Hanover) went for the lead and faded badly to finish fifth by 11 lengths.

In the filly Champlain, Paul Macdonell dazed the public as he directed Big Mcdeal (Mcardle) to the winner’s circle as a 25-1 shot. Shelliscape, with Pirouette Hanover (Western Ideal) at her side, chased down “Mcdeal,” only to finish behind her. Shelliscape was second and “Pirouette” was ¼ length off of Shelliscape, finishing third. Yummy Sushi (Rocknroll Hanover) broke around the turn. Angel Scent (Western Ideal) went a first-over trip and faded to fourth. Jet Speed (Jereme’s Jet) sat last, got cover and gained plenty of ground to finish sixth. Rockaround Sue (Rocknroll Hanover) lagged around the Mohawk oval, finishing fifth. Jack Darling Stables owns “Big.”

In the first colt Champlain, the Metro Pace runner-up Machapelo (Mach Three), owned by Enviro Stables, was victorious at 5-2 for Jody Jamieson. In Commando was second and Rockin Finish (Rocknroll Hanover) a 74-1 third. Great Waters (The Panderosa) passed tiring rivals to finish fifth. Adkins Hanover (Western Ideal) sat mid pack was shuffled back in the field and came outside but ended up finishing eighth. State Treasurer (Real Desire) came first over at the half and gave way, finishing fourth as the 7-5 favorite. Rockndream (Rocknroll Hanover) took the lead, but got passed by rivals and made a very bad break in the stretch, finishing 10th. Allstar Legend (Four Starzzz Shark) went for the lead but could not hold on to it and finished sixth. Hope Blue Chip (Art Major) sat in last and got up for seventh in the back of the field.

In the second Champlain, Speed Again (Dragon Again) raised his win percentage to 63 percent for owners Jeffrey Gillis, Ken Henwood, Mac Nichol and Gerald Stay. I Found My Beach finished second and Gable Blue Chip (American Ideal) was third. Keith Oliver took Special Blend (The Panderosa) first over at the half and faded to fifth. Bettors Edge (Bettor’s Delight) sat in sixth and finished sixth. Sing For Me George (Bettor’s Delight) was shuffled to seventh at the eighth pole and managed to find his way through horses and finished fourth. Hurrikane Kingcole (Cam’s Card Shark) went for the lead but could not maintain it and finished 10th.

Stateside, at Pocono, in the $342,875 Cane Pace, Betterthancheddar (Bettor’s Delight) took advantage of the speed in the race and got up to win, with Townslight Hanover (Bettor’s Delight) finishing second and Powerful Mist (Powerful Toy) closed late to finish third. Shadyshark Hanover (Cam’s Card Shark) worked hard to get the lead and went monstrous fractions. He ended up finishing fourth for Jim Morril,l Jr. Rollwithitharry (Rocknroll Hanover) came from last and closed to finish fifth. Roll With Joe (Cam’s Card Shark) got a horrible trip, being three wide at the first turn and finished sixth for Tim Tetrick. High Noon (Western Ideal) was 2 lengths off the bunch at three-quarters, but faded badly to finish eighth. Eighteen (Cam’s Card Shark) went a parked mile and finished ninth.

Betterthancheddar is owned by Steve Calhoun and West Wins Stable. He is trained by Casie Coleman and Yannick Gingras drove him to a 1:49.2 stakes record.

Freshman Pacers Featured at Freehold

On Saturday afternoon, Sept. 10, Freehold Raceway featured the $104,500 Lou Babic and the $60,500 Lou Babic filly for two-year-old pacers.

In the Lou Babic, Little Michael B got room in the stretch to win, with All Steinam (Tell All) finishing second and Verdad finished third. “Steinam” and Bullet Bob both left the gate with speed heading to the clubhouse turn. Steinam and “Bullet” dueled for the lead at the quarter in :28. “Michael” sat in third and Handsome Henry K (Western Ideal) was in fourth.

Steinam still lead the way as the pacers came into the stretch first time. Bullet was to Steinam’s outside in second and Michael was in third. Verdad came second over in fourth and “Henry” got shuffled back into fifth. Steinam lead them to the half in :57.2 (:29.2).

They went down the backstretch the final time and Steinam was still in front. Bullet was faltering first over and Verdad came three wide. Verdad was wheel to wheel with Steinam heading to three-quarters. Michael sat behind in third and Divulge (Tell All) got cover from Verdad. Steinam and Verdad dueled to three-quarters in 1:26.3 (:29.1).

Divulge came three wide to challenge Verdad and Steinam as they turned for home. Michael came up the passing lane and moved into third. Steinam was able to hold off Michael until the 1/16 pole, where Michael got his head in front and won by a ½ length. All Steinam was second and Verdad was third.

Narragansett (Rocknroll Hanover) finished fourth. Handsome Henry K, Divulge and Mortal Zin (Rocknroll Hanover) finished off the board.

In the Lou Babic Filly, Clear View Hanover won, with My Ideal Hanover finishing second and My Deal was third. There was only one eligible, Regal Rock (Rocknroll Hanover). She finished seventh of the octet.

Schools in Session for Freshman Trotters

On Friday, September 09, freshman trotters, both male and female, competed in the $50,000 Kindergarten at The Red Mile.

In the first filly Kindergarten, Can’t Have My Moni (Cantab Hall) was victorious, with Personal Style (Yankee Glide) finishing second and Miss Fidget was third. Angel Eyes Hanover (Cantab Hall), along with Miss Fidget and Goddess Of Time all left for the lead. Approaching the opening fraction, “Goddess” had the lead at the inside, while “Fidget” was two wide and “Angel” went off stride three wide. Fidget controlled the pace at the quarter in :29.1.

Goddess was narrowing in on Fidget by the half in :59.1 (:30). Ava Marion was in third and “Moni” was in fourth. Around the far turn, Fidget had about a 2 length lead on Goddess in second. “Marion” came first over in third and Moni settled second over, behind Marion. Marion was 1 length off of Fidget at three-quarters in 1:29.3 (:30.2). Moni moved into third and Goddess was gapping at the rail in fourth.

In the stretch, Fidget had the lead and Marion was alongside in second. Moni fanned out three wide and “Personal” came out four wide. Fidget was being urged on by Ed Lohmeyer as Moni and Personal were full of trot. Moni took the lead, Personal moved into second and Fidget was in third. Moni won, with Personal Style second, Miss Fidget third and Ava Marion finished fourth.

Quiche Lorraine S (Viking Kronos) finished fifth, Angel Eyes Hanover broke around the clubhouse turn, finishing seventh and Southwind Syrinx (Muscles Yankee) broke at the start of the backstretch, finishing eighth.

In the second filly Kindergarten, Sterling Volo (Donato Hanover) won, with Celebrity Lovin (Andover Hall) finishing second and Holier Than Thou (Cantab Hall) finished third. “Lovin” and “Sterling” both left the gate with speed heading to the clubhouse turn. All In The Muscles (Muscles Yankee) was off stride in third and Senorita Glide (Yankee Glide) was on a break. Sterling had a 3 length lead at the quarter in :29.4. Lovin was in second, Backflip was in third and Mrs D (Chocolatier) was in fourth. There was no change in order at the half in 1:01 (:31.1).

Sterling started to drift at three-quarters in 1:31.2 (:30.2), giving room for Lovin to slip by. Backflip was in third and Mrs D circled out two wide in fourth. Sterling drifted about five wide heading to the 1/16 pole. Lovin was coming up the pylons and Mrs D was off stride in the back. “Holier” found room and slipped into third. Sterling was able to get her neck in front to win. Celebrity Lovin was second, Holier Than Thou was third and Love N Lindy finished fourth.

All In The Muscles, Mrs D, Senorita Glide and Joy To The World (Muscles Yankee) finished fifth, seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively.

In the final filly Kindergarten, Aldebaran Malibu (Cantab Hall) was victorious, with Kissnmakup Hanover finishing second and Sandra Volo was third. “Sandra” and Friendly Persuader (Muscles Yankee) both left the gate with speed. Melrose Abbey (Muscles Yankee) went off stride heading to the clubhouse turn. “Friendly” cleared the lead at the quarter in :29.4. Sandra and Lindy’s Madonna (Donato Hanover) dueled for the second spot down the backstretch.

“Madonna” cleared the lead at the three-eighths pole. Friendly pulled back into second and Sandra was back in third. End Of Innocence was at the inside in fourth. Madonna lead the freshman fillies to the half in :59.3 (:29.4).

Around the far turn, Madonna had the lead. Friendly pulled the pocket in second and Sandra filled in the gap in third. Friendly went off stride, so Sandra inherited the second position. “Innocence” was in third and Donatoprincess applied pressure in fourth. Madonna had the lead at three-quarters in 1:30.3 (:31).

Madonna had the lead at the top of the stretch, Sandra circled out two wide and Innocence was back in third. “Donato” was in fourth. “Aldebaran” came from the back of the field, four wide challenging Sandra. Aldebaran got up to win, with Kissnmakup Hanover coming from the clouds, finishing second, Sandra Volo was third and Lindy’s Madonna finished fourth. Friendly Persuader finished eighth and Melrose Abbey finished tenth.

In the first colt Kindergarten, Gym Tan Laundry won, with Balzed (Muscles Yankee) finishing second, Light N Shadow (Classic Photo) was third and Big Chocolate (Chocolatier) was fourth. “Chocolate,” “Light” and “Laundry” all left the gate fast heading to the first turn. Chocolate commanded the pace at the quarter in :30.2. Light pulled into second and Laundry was first over in third.

Down the backstretch, Making Muscles (Muscles Yankee) went on a break. There was no change in order at the half in :59.3 (:29.1). Chocolate had the lead around the far turn, with Light in second and Laundry in third. Blazed was far back in fourth. Chocolate took the freshman to three-quarters in 1:29.2 (:29.4). Light pulled the pocket in second and Laundry was under pressure from Blazed in third.

Into the stretch, Chocolate was under pressure from Laundry, Blazed and Light. Chocolate gave way to the trio approaching the 1/16 pole. Laundry found room at the pylons and Blazed was coming with trot. Laundry took the lead approaching the wire and was able to hold off Blazed to win. Light N Shadow was third and Big Chocolate settled for fourth.

Duluth (Chocolatier), My Cousin Lindy (Cantab Hall) and Making Muscles finished fifth, seventh and eighth, respectively.

In the final Kindergarten, Vic Smith won, with Magic Tonight (Andover Hall) finishing second and Paper Backed Lindy finished third. Everybody left the gate with speed heading to the turn. “Vic” cleared, with “Magic” in second and Highland Yankee was first over in third. Vic lead the colts to the quarter in :29.3. Magic was in second, “Highland” was on the outside in third and Brussle Sprout was in fourth. There was no change in order at the half in :59 (:29.2).

Vic was unpressured at three-quarters in 1:29.3 (:29.3). Magic came on to the outside in second and Highland rode the pylons in third. Vic had no problem in the stretch and coasted to victory. Magic Tonight finished second, Paper Backed Lindy was third and Brussle Sprout was fourth.

Mohawk Picks September 3

This Saturday at Mohawk Racetrack features great stake action, including the $245,288 Simcoe, $633,000 She’s A Great Lady, $1,000,000 Metro, $832,000 Canadian Pacing Derby and the $100,000 A Spring Of Hope Invitational. Listed below are my picks for tonight’s Mohawk card.

Analysis:

Race 1 Daily Double (1-2), Exactor, Triactor, Superfecta, Pick 3 (1-2-3)

$50,000 She’s A Great Lady Consolation

Picks- (4) Bound To Rock raced well in her elimination, pacing a final quarter in :26.4. Since the field of the consolation is poor, she has a great shot.

Race 2 Exactor, Triactor, Superfecta, Pick 3 (2-3-4)

$38,000 Preferred Pace

Picks- (3) Dalihouse Dave has done well in Open company and has finished second in the Preferred ranks before. He may bring a price, since he is stepping up. (4) Aracache Hanover is the superior horse in this field. He has dominated the Open ranks several times and did well in the free for all stakes. This should be a walk in the park for him.

Race 3 Exactor, Triactor, Superfecta, Pick 3 (3-4-5)

$100,000 A Spring Of Hope Mares Invitational

Picks- (3) Rock N Soul’s last start in the Golden Girls is unexplainable but has done well in every start before that. She may do better tonight. (6) Royal Cee Cee N has dominated in the Open’s at Chester and Pocono. Seeing her against these gals is very impressive. (7) Anndrovette tried to steal the Golden Girls but was caught by Dreamfair Eternal, finishing second. She did well in Canada and may show that talent tonight.

Picks- (4) D Terminata is an elimination winner. He has really started  to improve and may be the best in this field. (6) Allstar Legend finished second in his elimination. He has shown how good he is when he stays flat. He will be on the board if he does not break. (7) Hurrikane Kingcole went too fast and finished third in his elimination. If Ouellette can ration out his speed, he will draw away from this bunch.

He got in the cover flow and closed to finish third. He could take control of the speed and bomb.
